Acetonitrile colourless liquid is the simplest organic nitrile. It is produced mainly as a byproduct of acrylonitrile manufacture. Acetonitrile has only modest toxicity in small doses. It can be metabolised to produce hydrogen cyanide, which is the source of the observed toxic effects.
